Pop Music Video Analysis

This pop music video by Taylor Swift explores all the stereotypical conventions that are needed to create the 'perfect' music video.Throughout this video there is a main story line surrounding the idea of a typical teen relationship and how it all works. This story line is continued throughout which keeps with the stereotypes of a music video for the pop genre.

When we first get introduced to the music video, we are introduced to the artist straight away as she is lipsynching directly into the camera in time to the music. This follows the strict rules of conventions as we should become familiar with who the artist is throughout. In the music video she is also playing the main character to the story theme of the song.

The first setting we come across is a mid shot of Taylor sitting by her apartment window in her pajamas. The furniture in her apartment is very bright but quite old fashioned looking. This could be used to show that this song was set in an older time and the use of clothing also shows this. After she has sat and explained her story for a while by singing to the camera, we are then introduced to the boy who she is singing about. We can see that there is tension between them by their performance. Their body language seems awkward and this especially happens when she is telling him to get out.

When he gets out of the room Taylor walks into another room to sing the chorus she is surrounded by many different people in costumes that are playing instruments. This could be counted as another scene although this could also not be true as she is still in the apartment and environment.

To get to the next setting we are cleverly introduced by a pan onto the TV where Taylor if also singing. The door then swings open to where we can see her and the boy sitting down at the table. When we take a closer inspection we can see that she has completely changed her hair, makeup and overall costume. This is very stereotypical of a pop music video, or music videos in general. This is because the conventions state that there should be 2 or more different locations throughout the course of the video.

She then walks over to the phone on the wall where she picks it up and the screen splits into two different scenes. We can see that the boy which she is singing about is at a party surrounded by lots of women. This again happens on the chorus which is conventional as this is when you would usually see a change in the pattern/scenario of the video.

For the bridge part of the song, we encounter another two settings very quickly. One of them is her and the boy back in the good stages of their relationship where they never thought that they would break up. It then goes to a scene where she is on the phone, possibly gossiping to a friend, talking about the guy. For the last remaining repeated chorus's, she remains to go back to the people dressed in costumes in darker areas playing the instruments. This then becomes a very iconic part to the music video itself.

Class Music Video Feedback.

Teenagers - Partner - Andrew Ducasse

Feedback:

When looking back at my music video I feel the whole class as a whole did a good job in performing the song well so that is was easy to match up the lip syncing to the music. The majority of the shots were in focus and were from a range of different angles which stuck to the conventions of a stereotypical music video.

When watching back my video I saw that we had successfully linked up the lip syncing within the footage to the music itself. We had also used a range of different locations within a school environment so that it suited the theme of the music and the conventions of a music video. At the beginning of the piece we had used the opening clip as the main singer in the band. This fits in well as to fit in with the expectations of a music video as we should always be introduced to the band first.

I had also noticed that we had put too many of the same sorts of clips in one place so that it meant we didn't have a variety within the piece. This could lead to the audience getting confused or bored as the clips were randomly scattered throughout. We shouldn't have had the extra clips at the end as it did not fit in with the requirements of this task as there was no lip syncing involved.
